Market Commentary

The economy is partly struggling because of excessive importation of cheaper goods. Chinese contractors come with their equipment, materials, cement and labour. Local manufacturers struggle to compete with Chinese products. It's a ruthless battle and battles are costly.

CIC Insurance released its 2013 year end results which registered a marginal rise in profitability. Profits before tax stood at KES 1.67 billion, up 1.3% from KES 1.64 billion in 2012 due to increase in claims incurred and operating expenses.
Britam reported a profit of KES 3.2 billion up from 2.8 billion in the previous year, heralding a growth of 12.2% in the year. The good news was translated into dividends as the company announced a dividend of KES 0.25 per share.
Housing finance full year results for 2013 are out. The consolidated group's profit after tax stood at KES 995 million, a 33.9% growth from the 2012 full year results.

British-American Investments Company (Kenya) Limited is a holding and investment company for insurance, investment management and property businesses in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique following the acquisition of Real Insurance in 2014. The Company's business segments include long term insurance business, short term insurance business, asset management, property , banking and other services. Britam is the banking industry through a 10.64% stake in equity bank and 48.82% in Housing Finance. The long term insurance business segment includes protection of its customers against the risk of premature death, disability, critical illness and other accidents. The short term insurance business segment includes the protection of customers' assets (both for personal and commercial business).
